Of course it’s a great adulty accomplishment when you can purchase a new appliance for your home. But does it have to be fresh out of the store’s stockroom? What’s wrong with a gently used appliance?
Plenty of people will buy an appliance and then decide they didn’t like the color, or they didn’t measure properly (“measure twice, cut once” – every dad’s Golden Rule) and now they don’t know what to do with it because the store won’t return it.

If you are okay with buying a used car, then what’s stopping you from looking for a used appliance? Nothing, that’s what. Now, there’s a difference between buying something used from some random person on Craiglist and going to a reputable used appliance store.
Pros and Cons
Buying used opens up a slight can of worms that you wouldn’t have when buying brand new. If you feel it’s worth the risks, or you don’t generally have trouble (knock on wood) with your appliances, then go ahead and look for that used fridge.
PROS
- Can negotiate the price (unless you’re me, I’d negotiate myself to a higher price)
- Not paying full price
- Most “used” pieces just have a dent, scratch, or other superficial flaw
CONS
- Won’t get a warranty
- Finding all matching pieces could be difficult
- Will have to pick it up yourself
- Will need to install yourself
The Big Ones: Fridge, Washer and Dryer
The bigger, generally more expensive appliances are the ones that you should think about buying used. The larger appliances usually have the longest life span, and more often than not don’t require much in terms of maintenance or repair.
The three most expensive pieces in your kitchen are your fridge, washer, and dryer. If you go for top quality name brands, you are going to shell out thousands for these items.
Just be aware that if you buy used off of someone in Facebook Marketplace or somewhere like that, you could potentially set yourself up to give away your money and then also be stuck with an appliance that doesn’t work.
